BIOGRAPHY

Joseph Watson Young was born January 12, 1828 in Mendon, Monroe County, New York.

Joseph arrived in Salt Lake City in the middle of September, 1847 in the second company of pioneers.

Joseph went to Great Britain on a mission in 1849 and served there for four years. On September 18, 1852 he married Mary Ann Pugh in England and February 15, 1853 they left Liverpool on the "Elvira Owen" with 345 Saints under his direction. As the company crossed the plains, on the way to Utah, Mary Ann passed away.

Joseph filled another mission to Great Britain in 1857 & 1858 and then was called as Bishop of the Payson, Utah, Ward in 1861.

Joseph served as an Assistant to the President under Erastus Snow in the Southern Utah Mission. On April 5, 1868, Joseph was called to be President of the Muddy River Mission.

On November 7, 1869, at a conference in St. George, the St. George Stake of Zion was organized with Joseph as its first Stake President. He served in that position until his death.

Joseph W. Young was elected Mayor of St. George from 1870 to 1872. In 1872 & 1973, he served as a representative of Washington County in the Utah Territorial Legislature.

Joseph died on June 7, 1873 in Harrisburg, Utah.
On June 9, he was buried in Plot A_E_92_5 of the St. George City Cemetery.
