HISTORY

The New Harmony Family History Center had its beginning as a project by local ward members who desired a place for members to do family history work. Many people donated computers, work stations, and chairs.

From a small beginning in November 2004 as a three-computer local facility, a couple called to oversee it, and 3-4 volunteer workers, the Center has grown into an officially numbered facility complete with directors, 20 well-trained consultants, 3 trained volunteers, and a computer tech. The facility includes 10 computers linked through the Church into otherwise unavailable research programs, a microfilm reader-printer, 2 film readers, access to Family Support assistance, the ability to order microfilm, and all the enthusiasm and excitement generated among those who attend.

The Center, which is available to everyone in the entire valley, is open 20 hours per week with additional times available for special groups or training. Training for consultants is an on-going process; and each consultant feels the mantle of responsibility that has been given to them. They are able to spend more time working with patrons in their homes, which is the ideal method suggested by the Church. The Center is a place to obtain additional help from consultants and to do research using programs provided which would otherwise be very expensive for an individual at home.
